StormStock’s Martin Lisius recalls Hurricane Katrina 20 Years Later

August 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the costliest natural disaster in US history. Not only did Katrina physically reshape the Gulf Coast with world record 30-foot seas, it also sparked a massive population shift to inland areas. “Cities like Dallas-Ft. Worth where we are based, as well as Houston and San Antonio, welcomed thousands of new neighbors from southern Louisiana just after Katrina,” said Martin Lisius, filmmaker and StormStock founder. “Our Cajun and seafood restaurants have been booming every since. And, we see a lot more New Orleans Saints jerseys here in Cowboys country.”

Lisius and his team were in Katrina’s path in late August, 2005 awaiting her arrival. “24 hours before landfall, I turned to my producer Brandon Jennings and told him that Katrina could be a historic event after analyzing storm surge forecast data,” he said. “And, it was that and much more.”

Over a period of a few hours, Lisius managed to capture some of the most dramatic footage of Hurricane Katrina in existence including devastating storm surge in-progress on HD 1080p and on Super 35mm film (transferred to 4K video).
