StormStock team recalls Hurricane Katrina 20 years later
This year marks the 20th anniversary of arguably the most impactful natural disaster in US history. Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the northern US Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005 and brought with it the largest storm surge ever recorded, topping over 30 feet. Large portions of infrastructure in its path were completely removed while thousands of residents fled the region, never to return.
To record the event, a team of StormStock filmmakers gathered in the path of Katrina to await her arrival. Battling fierce winds and threatening surge, the crew was able to capture dramatic scenes during the height of the storm including roofing and other debris flying through the air, and cars and buildings overwhelmed by high water.
StormStock’s Hurricane Katrina collection is one of the most unique assemblies of footage depicting the storm’s arrival in existence. It includes content captured on standard-definition DV, HD 1080p, and 4K from Super 35mm film.
