StormStock captures the wrath (and kindness) of Hurricane Harvey

Last week, a relatively unimpressive tropical cyclone developed in the Gulf of Mexico. In a short period of time, the storm intensified and became a hurricane named Harvey. It tracked northwest and rapidly reached major hurricane category 4 status before making landfall near Rockport, Texas. Harvey continued to cause destruction over southeast Texas for 6 days. High winds devastated cities along the coast, and record-breaking rainfall of more than 50 inches flooded thousands of homes. For StormStock cinematographer and founder Martin Lisius, it was a storm like no other he’s witnessed. “Up until now, Hurricane Katrina was the most intense storm I’ve experienced,” he said. “There are three types of hurricanes; surge, wind and rain. Katrina is the record holder for storm surge, while Harvey now leads for flooding rains. Really, two exceptional storms occurring just within the last 12 years, both getting their super powers from the Gulf.”

Lisius and his team of shooters were able to capture Hurricane Harvey from various locations. The team photographed intense wind and rain, aerials of submerged homes and cars, flood rescues and evacuations, interviews with victims, and relief efforts.

“The most impressive thing I’ve seen over the past week is the outpouring of support by fellow Texans,” Lisius said. “I saw large groups of volunteers launching their own boats, joining other boat crews, carrying people to shore on their shoulders, bringing water, food, any assistance they could offer. I met an off duty EMT from Dallas, numerous citizens from Houston taking time off work to help, and a group of teenagers who were walking around looking for people to assist. Harvey was a brutal storm, but I have seen nothing but organized acts of kindness in response”.
