Image from 16K video wins stills competition

An image titled, “Tornadic Supercell over Goldenrod” won a stills competition hosted by the London-based Royal Photographic Society (RPS) this week. What makes it unique is the image is actually a still pulled from the 16K short film “Prairie Wind,” shot and directed by StormStock founder and cinematographer Martin Lisius. It was one of the winners in an RPS photo contest titled, “Movement.”

Last year, Lisius built a custom made 16K video camera system using two high-resolution DSLR’s and stitched the images together to create the film which he released in November. “It’s fascinating to see the coming together of motion picture film and still photography.” Lisius said. “Regardless of which medium you chose, it comes down to capturing quality subject, light and composition. One just moves 24 to 30 times faster than the other.”

Check out the winners of the RPS contest in the upcoming issue of the Journal, the society’s print publication, or view them online.
